In response to customer needs and the changing market conditions, HP technology now ranges from consumer handheld devices all the way to some of the world’s largest and most powerful supercomputer installations. We have a dynamic. Revenues reached $79.9 billion for the fiscal year 2004. President and CEO Mark Hurd lead HP, which has corporate headquarters in Palo Alto, California. Our annual R&D investment of nearly $4 billion fuels the invention of products, solutions and new technologies, so that we can better serve customers and enter new markets. We produce an average of 11 patents a day worldwide. HP European Innovation Centre is resourced by 40 highly skilled employees, all Electronic Engineers and Computer Scientists, with a R&D background. HP EIC belongs to HPC&I EMEA organization, part of a powerful team of 150,000 employees doing business in 43 currencies and in more than 170 countries. HP-EIC, together with HP Laboratories, the strategic research organisation for the company, is responsible for one third of the organisation's applied and fundamental research. HP has manufacturing operations in France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. They are worldwide centres for client/server computer systems, workstations, personal computers and peripherals, printing and imaging systems. Through our European manufacturing, HP’s products qualify for EU-funded projects to East and Central Europe. HP EIC, the strategic innovation development and research organisation for the company, has its European facility in Milan, Italy, but operations Europe-wide. The company has deliberately sought to grow, not only by relying on its marketing, but by actively investing in European manufacturing and R&D operations. HP is a long time participant in joint EU research initiatives, having been one of the first partners in the ESPRIT 1 Programme, and since then active as participant or coordinator in more than 50 projects. HP‘s partners include European universities and small- and medium-sized enterprises. HP's European Innovation Centre, is doing applied research, technology transfer and integration in the following areas:

  • Wireless technology based solutions (802.11 WLAN, seamless roaming)
  • Mobile enterprise, secure access to corporate networks for mobile users

Key researchers


Lorenzo CASTELLI (*) Technical Project Mgr – Graduated in Computer Science in 1998. Since 1998 he is working in HP Italy, at the HP C&I European Innovation Center since 2000, where he served as project leader in functional specification and solution architect for HP Consulting in several engagements for external customers. He has recently refocused his role into technical project mgr gaining experience in several R&D projects spanning from e-Government to Mobility applications and services.

Lorenzo BLASI (*) Graduated in Electronics Engineering in 1990, is a Technical Consultant for HP Consulting and Integration contributing to HP (and before to Digital and Compaq) since 1990. He has worked 7 years in the R&D and Corporate Engineering for Digital Equipment, developing releasing and maintaining software products for the worldwide market in the CASE and Manufacturing areas. Lorenzo has then spent 5 years with Compaq and HP delivering Consulting and Integration Projects for the Financial and Telecom markets and 4 years as Business Analysis Team leader for a major Telecom operator. He has wide technological skills in Software Engineering and Enterprise Integration, spanning from Analysis and Solution Architecture level to implementation details. Within HP C&I European Innovation Center, Lorenzo is currently contributing and owning technical responsibility for HP Italy participation in several EC Funded Projects including GridTrust, NEXTGrid and Robot@CWE.

Marco DI GIROLAMO (*1961) Graduated in Electronics Engineering summa cum laude in 1986. 16 years of working experience in R&D, IT and Consulting environments. In HP since 1993, covered positions in R&D as Development Engineer, in Customer Care as Back-end Support Engineer and, in IT as Service Delivery Manager. Since 2000 is working in HP C&I European Innovation Center, where served as technical leader and project manager in different engagements, both internal and external. Specialist in mobile services and application.

Role of partner

HP-EIC collaborates in the ROBOT@CWE project by designing and developing the software architecture, thanks to its expertise in large software projects and service-oriented architectures.
